Our story
Rescuing small dogs, one paw at a time.
Poquita Paws Rescue is a San Antonio-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to rescuing small dogs from the streets and high-kill facilities — and encouraging responsible pet ownership.
How it all began
In 2005, we started volunteering with several rescue organizations in the San Antonio area. It quickly became obvious that there was a real need to rescue dogs being surrendered by their owners and dogs found running the streets — before they ended up at Animal Care Services.
We also saw a need to help people find resources to place dogs that couldn't be taken into their homes. Occasionally we visit high-kill shelters, but our primary focus has always been the small dogs on the streets and those being surrendered by owners.
So in May of 2012, we decided to form our own rescue group. Poquita Paws Rescue is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization — all donations are tax deductible. All dogs are seen by appointment only.
What we believe
Small dogs, big hearts
Our focus is on small dogs — those surrendered by owners and those found on the streets of San Antonio before they reach high-kill facilities.
Community-driven
We are 100% volunteer-run. Our strength comes from the people who give their time, homes, and hearts to this mission every single day.
Responsible ownership
Beyond rescue, we're committed to educating the community about responsible pet ownership so fewer animals end up on the streets.
The people behind the paws
Our all-volunteer team is the backbone of Poquita Paws Rescue.
