Emma is a 10-pound senior Shih Tzu found stray in Bexar County with one eye and a serious leg wound. She had her rear right leg removed in April 2026 due to cancer and is now receiving rehab — cold laser, water treadmill, and acupuncture at Healing Hands. She is improving, hopping short distances, and standing to eat. Determined and sweet as can be.

Emmitt Joseph — EJ to his friends — is a 14-pound, 4-year-old Shih Tzu who moves to his own drummer and wins hearts doing it. His foster raves about what an easy, laid-back houseguest he's been. He's an only dog in his foster home but has visited the Poquita Paws house and politely shared the couch and big pillows with the younger crowd — he just doesn't do the crazy puppy play thing, and honestly, we respect that. He has favorite toys he loves to toss in the air, rides well in the car, walks fairly well on a leash, is friendly with all humans, and even gets along with the feral cat. EJ will kennel for short periods and overnight, but once he knows his home, daytime kenneling won't be needed. He is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and has completed heartworm treatment following the American Heartworm Association Protocol with flying colors — no symptoms prior to treatment. Meet Bailey — and what a story she has! This 14-pound purebred Schnauzer was brought to our vet late on a Friday for euthanasia without reason. Our vet refused, because Bailey is a perfectly healthy dog, and deferred to rescue. Thank goodness! Bailey has a beautiful soft grey coat and the most expressive, sweet face. She is doing well with the two rescues she currently shares a space with, uses the dog door like a pro, and absolutely lights up when her person arrives — especially when breakfast or lunch is involved! Meet Charlie — or Mr. Sweet Face as he's affectionately called! This handsome 14-pound black and white Terrier mix was surrendered by a family after just 1.5 weeks when three members developed significant allergies. When Charlie arrived he was quite insecure about being left alone, but he now knows his person is coming back and he can relax. He does wonderfully with the entire household of rescues and people — he even tolerates an enthusiastic young Yorkie who absolutely adores him. Charlie sleeps in a kennel, is doing great with house training (marking has decreased greatly), and loves exploring the yard, especially during yard work time. Nico's story starts on a very busy street where he was found frantic and scared — but this little guy's life is about to get a whole lot sweeter. The kind soul who rescued him fostered him for a couple of weeks while he recovered from surgery, and now Nico has joined the Poquita Paws pack of small rescues and is thriving! He gets excited and loves to grab a toy and toss it around, happily shares couch time with humans and four-legged friends alike, and is doing really well with housebreaking. He's learning to eat and sleep in a kennel, and while he definitely wants his person in sight — earning him the nickname "little whiney baby" — he absolutely melts once he knows sweet pets and cuddles are coming his way. He'd love to learn to walk better on a leash so he can get out and make his owner proud. Nico is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, heartworm negative, and has had a full vet evaluation. Figgy is such a special little pup! Found stray, frightened, in heat, full of fleas, and smelling of motor oil — it took several baths to get her clean and comfortable. It didn't take long for this sweet girl to settle in with her foster family. She gets along with other small dogs, is quiet, kennels well for sleep, and appears to be quite housebroken. She'll need a little work on leash walking, but that nubby little tail wiggling in excitement when she sees you makes it all worthwhile. Figgy is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm negative, and wormed. Adoption fee: $350.
